Rome Little Theatre’s PLAYSPACE meets Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 6:30–9:30 p.m. at the RLT Building, 502 East First Street in Rome, GA, for a table read of John Bishop’s The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.

The session welcomes adults 18 and older to read characters’ parts, discuss the play and meet fellow theatre enthusiasts. Seasoned actors and newcomers can join the conversation.

A script and some company offer a friendly way into local theatre, with a comedy full of mystery and increasingly ridiculous complications waiting at the table.

The Rome International Film Festival returns to downtown Rome, GA, November 5–8, 2026, opening Thursday with a 6:15 p.m. red carpet outside the Historic DeSoto Theatre and a 7:15 p.m. screening of The Accountant with special guest Ray McKinnon.

For four days, the next good story may be waiting inside a theater rather than on your television. Screenings and conversations also take place at Rome City Auditorium, SPAM Studios and Screen 417.

Danny McBride, this year’s Flannery O’Connor Award honoree, gives comedy fans an obvious entry point. Visiting filmmakers, independent features, documentaries and regional shorts offer plenty of other reasons to head downtown.

Friday expands the program, Saturday brings McBride appearances with event-specific admission terms, and Sunday closes with awards, films and a Dolly Parton tribute concert.

This preview highlights the weekend’s draws before you choose individual screenings. Check the official RIFF schedule for current venues, times and reservations.

Trivia Question❓

In what year was the city of Rome, Georgia founded, named after the capital of Italy?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Do You Know A Food Truck Operator?

🎉 Welcome to Seven Hills Spotlight! 🎉 I have been sending this newsletter out for the past 6 months in one form or another. My wife and I sit down every few weeks to check our calendars to see what events we might like to support or attend. These always include Rome Little Theatre, Rome Shakespeare, Rome International Film Festival, Shorter University Theatre, Berry College Theatre, Rome Festival Brass, Three Rivers Singers and Rome’s Own Music Ensembles. Sadly,  until now there is no place that has been a single, comprehensive calendar that includes all of these events.

As I have tracked these events, I have uncovered new and exciting venues. I reached out to some local news publishers in other towns who have similar audiences to see what works for their newsletters. We plan to continue to expand the weekly mailing to include new restaurants, food trucks, music, theatre, and cultural events. We plan to stay away from politics and arrest records. 😉

We recently moved our weekly from one format to another. During the next few weeks, as folks transition over, some of you might receive a second letter from the old source. Apologies for that, but I know that everyone who has been getting a second newsletter has been opening and reading our publication for months. We eliminated over 60% of our initial list months ago. This newsletter enjoys an extremely high open rate that has signaled to all the email services that this is a legitimate and highly desired e-publication for our local community. 📬✨

Thank you.

The 56th annual Helen Oktoberfest is already underway and runs through November 1, with weekend celebrations through September and daily events beginning October 1. It is the longest-running Oktoberfest in the United States, and year after year Helen lands among the country’s most recognized Oktoberfest destinations.

And if you’re going to drive that far, I’d...

Q&A Questions

Q: Why do three rivers appear in so many descriptions of Rome?

A: Downtown sits where the Oostanaula and Etowah rivers meet to form the Coosa. That confluence shaped the city’s early development and still gives its riverfront a distinct sense of place.

Q: What’s the story behind Rome’s Clock Tower?

A: The landmark began as a water tower in the 1870s. Today, its hilltop setting makes it a recognizable symbol of the city, with broad views across downtown.

Q: Where can visitors explore local Cherokee history?

A: Chieftains Museum preserves the former home of Major Ridge, a Cherokee leader. Its exhibits examine Cherokee life and the difficult history of removal.
