Massive Flames Destroy Historic Georgia Courthouse

Floyd County's 1892 Landmark Engulfed in Fire Amid Renovations

A devastating fire erupted on the afternoon of March 23, 2026, consuming the historic Floyd County Courthouse in Rome, Georgia. The blaze, which began around 2:12 p.m., rapidly engulfed the 1892 structure, leaving the community in shock.

Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord confirmed that all employees were safely evacuated, with no reported injuries. The courthouse, undergoing renovations at the time, housed the offices of the Tax Commissioner, Tax Assessor, and Tag Office. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters faced significant challenges due to the building's age and ongoing construction. Chief of Operations Clete Bonney noted concerns about the fire spreading to nearby Broad Street buildings. Crews worked tirelessly through the night, using drones to detect and extinguish hotspots.

In response to the disaster, the Floyd County Commission approved an emergency allocation of $100,000 to support the temporary relocation of courthouse operations. Services have been moved to the former Law Enforcement Center to minimize public disruption. Additionally, the Commission authorized up to $520,000 for stabilization efforts to prevent further damage and ensure public safety.

Commission Chair Rhonda Wallace praised the swift actions of first responders, stating, "Their quick response helped to ensure the building was evacuated and protected the lives of employees and visitors during a frightening and fast-moving situation."

The loss of the courthouse, a cherished landmark, has deeply affected the Rome community. Former County Chairman Wright Bagby expressed the community's sentiment, emphasizing the building's historical significance and the tragedy of its destruction.

As investigations continue, officials are committed to preserving any salvageable materials and determining the future of the site. The community remains resilient, coming together to support one another during this challenging time.
